Higher Education Experience Day for Disabled Students

Higher Education Experience Day for Disabled Students

The REACH Partnership is teaming up with local HEI’s to deliver a higher education experience day for disabled students. The day aims to inspire and excite students with disabilities about the possibilities of attending University!

A group of student ambassadors, currently studying university courses, will be on hand to answer questions and share their experiences as positive role models. There will be a range of free resources to take away.

The event will consist of input from De Montfort University, Loughborough University and University of Leicester, giving students a varied insight into Higher Education and the range of opportunities that exist locally.

The day will consist of a number of different workshops aimed at discussing and showing the support universities provide for students with disabilities.

Workshops will include:

  • Coloured overlay testing and reading rulers
  • Using a computer with a visual impairment – JAWS and magnification software.
  • Talking to a computer (Dragon)
  • Literacy support tools (Read and Write and Claro)
  • Guess the items – collection of equipment from the assessment centre
  • There will also be talks on the application process for attending university and what this entails, as well as a tour of De Montfort Campus.

This day is aimed at students who are thinking of, or planning to enter into higher education and will be open for years 10-13.

The event will take place on 28th February 2018.
